Year 3 News
Over the last two weeks, Year 3 have become artists and sculptors within their wider curriculum lessons. We have planned, experimented and created a prototype for our wire sculpture of a plant. This week, we have used a range of different wires to create the desired shape of our flower and then used tissue paper and other resources to embellish our designs. We are proud of our final products.
In maths, we have been learning about fractions. We have been developing our understanding of unit and non-unit fractions. A unit fraction always has the numerator of 1 and a non-unit fraction has a number other than 1 as its numerator. We have also found out that when the numerator and denominator of a fraction are the same number, the fraction is equivalent to 1 whole.
We have been writing persuasive letters in English about a topic of their choice: getting a family pet; going for a family day out; having a friend over or asking for a certain birthday gift. The children have been using persuasive techniques, including rhetorical questions, emotive language and the use of ‘you’ and ‘your’. We will be giving the children the option of sending these letters to their recipients, so a letter may be coming your way!
In Music, we are thoroughly enjoying our violin lessons with Mrs Edwards. We have been learning how to recognise, clap and pluck rhythms by using notes such as ‘ta’ and ‘ti-ti’. This week, we learnt the song ‘Manhattan Blues’ and played this on the violin. We look forward to these exciting lessons continuing next half term.
For RE, we created a giant timeline of the ‘Big Bible Story’. The blue paper represents the Old Testament (the time before Jesus was born), whilst the red paper represents the New Testament (the time after Jesus was born).
In Spanish, we have been learning about fruits and vegetables. We have learnt how to ask for them politely and have used our knowledge of fruit and vegetables to understand the story ‘The Hungry Giant’.
For PE this half term, the children have been learning the rules of rounders and playing various forms of the game. This week, the children played football rounders which was a very exciting variation on the usual game.
Friday was Outdoor Learning Day. We started the day by playing an arithmetic maths relay game. This was great fun and reinforced addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. We made pin wheels for the garden. We also used toilet rolls, string, oats and seeds to make some bird feeders for the garden. As our science experiment has come to an end, we planted any healthy plants into the school garden. In the afternoon, we joined some children from LVS for a treasure hunt.
