Year 3 - News
Over this half term, Year 3 will be scientists and artists as we explore flowering and non-flowering plants and their parts in order to create a flower sculpture. Last week, we set up our investigation to find out what factors may affect a plant’s ability to grow. Across the class, we are exploring a range of beans and seeds to see what the impact is of either: very little water, no light or warmer temperature. The children will be comparing their plant growth to our control plants. We are looking forward to seeing what happens. In our science lessons, we have also researched different parts of plants and their functions.
In maths, we have been learning about fractions. We have spent time using resources to identify the whole, number of equal parts and size of each part as a unit fraction. E.g. The whole is 12. The whole has been divided into 4 equal parts. Each part is ¼ of the whole. Subsequently, we then calculated the value of a part by using division facts and finding a fraction of a quantity. ¼ of 12 = 3.
In our English lessons, we have been using some poems from ‘Love that dog’ by Sharon Creech to write our own calligrams. A calligram is a word or piece of text in which the design and layout of letters creates a visual image related to the meaning of the words themselves. We have created calligrams about fruits and animals. We have also written a free-verse poems about the roads in which they live, incorporating expanded noun phrases and onomatopoeia.
In Music, we have started our Year 3 violin lessons with Mrs Edwards. We are really enjoying using the instruments, learning how to hold it accurately and plucking the strings. We have learnt each of the strings using animal names: Gorilla, Dolphin, Alligator, Elephant. We are very excited to start using the bows to make music.
For PE this half term, we will be developing our skills in volleyball. Last week, we focused on intercepting and stopping the ball consistently and taking positions that make it difficult for opponents. This week, we were developing our control and accuracy when throwing/rolling a ball.
