Year 3 News
Last week, we welcomed Jo and Ali from AXA into our school to support us in leading a workshop based on road safety.
We particularly focused on how to be a 'Backseat BOSS'. BOSS being an acronym for:
- Buckle up
- Off your phone
- Steer with both hands
- Stop at the red light
The children were fully engaged and thoroughly enjoyed all the games and activities involved.
A massive thank you to Jo and Ali for coming in and delivering this workshop.
We have started our study of Europe. We initially reminded ourselves where in the world Europe was and that it was a continent (The second smallest in the world!). We labelled countries and capital cities onto maps of Europe as well as the physical geographical features including mountains and rivers. The following week, we were introduced to our 3 focus countries: France, Italy and Greece. We spent time researching physical and human geographical features of these countries. We made posters in groups about one of our focus countries and found out important facts including language spoken, capital city, landmarks and population.
On return from May half term, Year 3 have started our study of Europe. We have created our own maps Europe, plotting where countries are and their capital cities. We also created a map of the mountain ranges and some of the rivers throughout Europe. We have selected three focus countries: France, Italy and Greece. We have thoroughly enjoyed researching the physical and human geography of our focus countries, including learning about their population, languages spoken as well as popular foods and sports. Recently, we have been looking at textile art and have studied Alice Kettle and Hannah Rae’s works. We are creating our own textile piece of art inspired by the landscape of our of our focus countries. We used textile paint to create our coloured background ready for us to embellish with thread on Friday during our Great Hammond Sewing Stint.
In maths, we have been learning about angles. We have been developing our understanding of right angles and identifying them in shapes.
In English, we are currently writing a non-chronological report about a celebration or festival. There is a twist however, because our festival/celebration does not need to be real. We have a wide variety of different themed celebrations, including Eid, Chinese New Year, ‘Dog day’ and ‘Gaming festival’.
Within our violin lessons, we have started to learn about the bow and how to hold and use it. Miss Cunningham and Miss McCarthy are very impressed with how well we are getting on.
