GLF Schools

GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

Curriculum Rationale

At Hammond School, the PSHE & RSE curriculum enables our children to become healthy, independent, and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

At our school, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We use the World Health Organisation’s definition of mental health and wellbeing:

“A state of wellbeing, in which every individual realises his or her potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

Our school environment is supportive, caring and respectful. We encourage pupils to be open, have their voices heard and be proud to be part of our school community.

We know that everyone experiences different life challenges, and that each of us may need help to cope with them sometimes. We understand that anyone and everyone may need additional emotional support. At our school, positive mental health is everybody’s responsibility. We all have a role to play.

Floorbooks

Intent

Our PSHE & RSE scheme reflects the views, beliefs and backgrounds of the children in our school. By following the Kapow scheme of work, we ensure that we adhere to existing DfE guidance on: Sex and Relationships Education, preventing and tackling bullying, safeguarding and equality.

At our school we strive to ensure:

  • all of our children feel happy, safe and can learn and achieve.

  • children are able to maintain positive relationships with others.

  • everyone is given the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings.

  • staff and pupils recognise the warning signs of mental health challenges.

  • all children are given the tools to understand and regulate their emotions, regardless of mental health challenges.

  • children can develop age-appropriate coping strategies.

  • the school community feels confident talking openly to trusted members of staff.

  • the school community can manage times of stress, deal with change and build resilience.

The PSHE scheme of work will support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and patterns of behaviour, which enable pupils to:

  • Have a sense of purpose

  • Value self and others

  • Form relationships

  • Make and act on informed decisions

  • Communicate effectively

  • Work with others

  • Respond to challenge

  • Be an active partner in their own learning

  • Be active citizens within the local community

  • Explore issues related to living in a democratic society

  • Become healthy and fulfilled individual

PSHE1

Implementation

We use the Kapow scheme of work across the school which is progressive and enables the children to discuss ideas at a deep level. Our spiral curriculum ensures full coverage of personal, social, health, wellbeing and economical education across all year groups. By building on previous years’ learning our children are not starting from scratch, rather they are activating their prior knowledge and deepening their understanding in every lesson. Lessons incorporate a range of activities which allow the children to work in pairs, groups and as a whole class to create individual and collaborative tasks.

Teaching points that may arise throughout the school day will be addressed in an ad-hoc manner to ensure quick and effective resolutions. ‘Feel Good Fridays’ are scheduled each half term and allow children to explore their emotional and physical wellbeing, and healthy lifestyles.

PSHE2

Impact

By the end of their time at Hammond School, we want children to be well rounded, confident young people. They will be able to express their thoughts and feelings in a respectful manner, identify and maintain healthy relationships and understand how to keep themselves safe in a variety of situations.

By children taking part in this subject, they will be empowered to become self-aware and develop an understanding of their own and others’ emotions. They will also be prepared to become active citizens.

The subject leads will monitor the implementation of the PSHE & RSE curriculum through discussion with staff and pupils. Pupil voice will show high levels of engagement and understanding, and children will be able to discuss the strategies and skills they have been taught. Floor books will demonstrate the journey the children take in their learning, as well as exercise books when relevant.

PSHE3

What the children say:

“I think PSHE is an amazing subject because we learn to take care of ourselves and it teaches us a lot of stuff about being safe” Year 3 pupil

“We learn really important things about our body and keeping safe. It teaches really valuable lessons.” Year 4 pupil

“I think it is important to learn how to keep safe in the outside world and it’s important to learn how to become the best we can be.” Year 5 pupil

“I like PSHE lessons because we learn about things you don’t learn about in other subjects. I also like the way we write all our ideas on post-it notes and then put them together to make one big piece of work.” Year 6 pupil

PSHE Leads- Lucy Gunn and Allison Martin

Our PSHE provision is developed to give pupils the skills, knowledge, and understanding they need to keep themselves mentally healthy. This includes resilience techniques and training. We regularly review our PSHE provision to ensure that it is meeting the needs of all children in our school.

Useful Websites

RSE

Relationships and Sex Education provides an excellent forum to provide pupils with life-skills that will enable them to make informed decisions and protect themselves against harmful and exploitative situations. Sex and Relationships Education is therefore a tool to safeguard children.

Relationships and Sex Education contributes to our PSHE curriculum through the Kapow scheme of work and offers a valuable vehicle for promoting equality between individuals and groups. It involves an exploration of human and social diversity, and a fostering of self worth whilst recognising, accepting and respecting differences.

Objectives are for primary school pupils to:

Develop confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships;

Be able to name parts of their body and describe how their bodies work;

Be prepared for puberty.

Teaching staff in all schools to be confident:

In planning, delivering and assessing RSE

In answering parents’ questions and dealing with sensitive issues
