Wellbeing (Including Relationships Education)

At Hammond School, we are committed to supporting and promoting positive mental health and wellbeing for every member of our school community. The whole school community's emotional wellbeing and mental health are at the heart of the culture and ethos of our school. Our school environment is supportive, caring, respectful. We encourage pupils to be open, have their voices heard and be proud to be part of our school community.

At our school, we know that everyone experiences different life challenges, and that each of us may need help to cope with them sometimes. We understand that anyone and everyone may need additional emotional support. At our school, positive mental health is everybody’s responsibility. We all have a role to play. We pursue this by using both whole school approaches and targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable children.

Aims

  • All our children feel happy, safe and can learn and achieve.
  • Children are able to maintain positive relationships with others.
  • Everyone is given the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings.
  • Staff and pupils recognise the warning signs of mental health challenges.
  • All children are given the tools to understand and regulate their emotions, regardless of mental health challenges.
  • Children can develop age-appropriate coping strategies.
  • The school community feel confident talking openly to trusted members of staff.
  • The school community are able to manage times of stress, deal with change and build resilience.

What does Wellbeing look like at our school?

Wellbeing is at the heart of our schools vision of ‘Achieving Excellence Together’. Our Wellbeing Curriculum seeks to equip our children with the skills they need to be healthy, happy and safe. It incorporates the programme of study from the PSHE Association (which includes objectives meeting Relationship and Sex Education); The Thrive Approach, E-Safety, Anti-Bullying and Mindfulness strategies to support children’s emotional wellbeing and mental health. We teach Wellbeing discretely and our aim is for wellbeing to underpin all aspects of our curriculum so that our children can be the best they can be.

What is RSE?

Relationship and Sex Education in our school is about the emotional, social and cultural development of pupils, and involved learning about relationships, healthy lifestyles, diversity and personal identity. It is taught as part of our Wellbeing curriculum. Our curriculum does not contain sex education. Chidlren are taught vocabulary relating to physical anatomy.

Aims

  • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place
  • Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene
  • Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy
  • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships
