Year Four
14/03/2025
In year 4 we have planned and just started writing our own Portal stories based on the book ‘Leon and the place between.’ The children have chosen a scenario and based their story from this.
In Maths, we have just finished coordinates, and we are now starting to look at symmetry.
In reading we are reading the book The Boy at the Back of the class. The children are enjoying this book, and we will continue reading this for the rest of the half term.
The children have been looking at the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in History. We have been looking to see if we agree or disagree with the statement of the ‘The Anglo-Saxons are more powerful than the Vikings.’ The children have also created some wonderful double page spreads. We are now moving on to looking at making Viking coin purses. Please see the parent mail with information on coming into school to help us make these!
All the children made a wonderful effort for world book day and we saw some fantastic costumes! We joined in as part of the BBC big read live lesson and paraded our costumes around the playground with the other year groups in the school. It was great to see the other year groups costumes too!
On Thursday 13th March the children took part in outdoor learning day. We started the day with some fun activities on the field, followed by us creating a bubble mixture and bubble wands from scratch. Due to it being science week it was fun to look at how the components that we added together mixed and allowed us to create some big, holdable bubbles. The children had lots of fun with this!
Computing
This half term Year 4 are moving on to create their first game in Scratch called Boat Race. The aim of the game is to help a small boat navigate a maze by following the mouse pointer to reach the island in the fastest time. There are speed boosters and obstacles to navigate. They will be introduced to the concept of selection using IF statements so that if the boat hits the walls of the maze the boat will appear to crash and break up and then respawn at the start.
They will also be introduced to the concept of using variables to keep track of the number of lives left to complete the game and a timer so they can compete against each other. Testing and debugging their code will also be really important so that they can make sure their games work as intended.

Year 4 are happy to report that the Oswald twins have safely returned to the classroom, after a month of travelling the world!
In English this week, we have been reading the book Leon and the Place Between. The children have been looking at how to author uses precise and detailed language to create an exciting atmosphere. We have begun learning about the Anglo-Saxons in history and have discovered that they were originally many warring tribes who arrived in Britain looking for better land to farm. In maths, we have been working on our knowledge of co-ordinates, translating shapes and points in a grid.
