World Book Day – Thursday 5th March 2020

This year, World Book Day takes place on Thursday 5th March 2020. World Book Day celebrates the joy and value of books and reading, especially for children.

To celebrate this day, your child can come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book or from any book. As you may be aware there are endless amounts of characters that your child can dress up as, however if you would like some inspiration please visit the World Book Day website (www.worldbookday.com).

During their day at school, your child will participate in a variety of World Book Day activities. This year, each year group will focus on a particular author; their usual lessons will have a World Book Day twist and will be based on the Year Group author’s books and characters.

Reading Licences

Before Christmas, the children were introduced to Reading Licences. This is a new idea that we are using across the entire school to promote reading and to encourage the children to read a wider range of books. Each child has received a licence that illustrates a road with eighteen different ‘pit stops’, each pit stop has a different text type, genre or author that your child will need to read. Once they have achieved this pit stop they will need to go to the library during break time and receive a stamp from one of the Year 6 librarians, who will then direct them to the next book. Once they have read all eighteen text types, genres or authors they will be moved up to gold and receive a Parsons Party Voucher.

At Hammond, we feel it is important for the children to read a variety of books in order to develop their language choice, understanding and reading skills. In using the reading licence the children are given ideas of what to read to support this. Each book or author that is recommended is available in the library for your child to read and take home – if your child takes home a book please ensure that it is returned to school when they are finished. Please discuss these licences with your child/children to encourage them to take part.

Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support to our school. We look forward to seeing all the fantastic costumes on World Book Day.

Book Fair – Week Commencing 2nd March

Finally, I would like to inform you that we are once again, hosting a Scholastic Book Fair. Similarly to our October Book Fair, every book purchased will earn the school reward points that can be used to
